The word LASER is formed of first letters of English description of the process - Light Amplifications by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Based on this process the light beam with unique properties is generated, which may produce different effects when it interacts with matter.

Depending on "active media" (materials, atoms and molecules of which are used to emit quants of light or photons), different types of lasers are developed- solid state, gas, liquid, semiconductor, etc.
